Why Socks Are Important When Flying

May 14, 2011 – I hate long flights. You get aboard, and the plane is cramped, small, and stuffy. Not to mention that you were unfortunate enough to have bought the seat in between a fat, elderly couple who constantly bickered over your head. And then, to top it all off, you notice that your legs start to cramp, and begin to get sore. You try stretching them out, but nothing helps. This has happened to me so many times that I began to lost count. And when you finally do get off the plane, your legs feel like a mound of Jell-O. If only someone had told me about compression socks sooner! Then I never would have had to deal with the leg stiffness and soreness.

Compression socks, aside from being used by athletes, can normal everyday people like you and me as well. Compression socks are most commonly used by athletes, and by hospital staff who wish to make sure that their patients don’t end up with a blood clot in their leg during or after surgery. But can you still use compression socks if you aren’t an athlete or in need of a surgery any time soon? You bet your buns you can! Compression socks are beneficial because they help to improve the blood flow and circulation in your legs, thus eliminating sore and stiff legs. If you are a frequent flier, I highly recommend wearing compression socks during your long flights between business meetings. I noticed a big difference before I wore the compression socks, compared to how I felt after the flight while I was wearing the compression socks. When you are sitting down for extended periods of time, such as in a long flight, the blood in your legs tends to ‘pool’. This just basically means that you have poor blood circulation because you are sitting down. If you wear compression socks during the flight, your blood will not have the chance to sit still and ‘pool’ and you will feel much better afterwards.
