Tips For Cleaning A Contaminated Pool

September 7, 2011 –

Summer fun will never be complete without a splash in the pool to cool down the summer heat. For those where beaches are hard to reach, swimming pools are a haven to cool down and to bask in the summer heat. But what if the water in your pool has turned a shade of green? It is indication that your pool already needs cleaning and leaving you less time to enjoy the pool and to have fun.

There are two reasons for a green water in your pool, first metal reaction and secondly an algal bloom. The process of cleaning green pool water depends on which of the reasons mentioned above has caused the green water. It is advisable to take a sample of your pool water and have it tested for metals. Metals react with the chlorine in your pool turning it green or even brown and they are naturally occurring especially if your water source is from the ground. A chelating agent should be added in order to find out the presence of metals in your water source. If the present metal in the water is copper, you can use alum as chelating agent, the reason why you should have it tested first is to know what chelating agent to use.

If the reason is algal bloom, then there is something wrong with the pH of your pool. An imbalance of pH or alkalinity causes the algal bloom. A very high or low pH can significantly decrease the effectiveness of your chlorine. You need to balance the pH and put in algaecide in your pool to suppress the buildup of algae. Use a filter brush and vacuum to get the debris out of the pool then run the filter for 24 hours to get all of the dead algae. This procedure also entails frequent filter replacement and pool cleaning to be effective. Add a blue clarifier solution once the green starts to disappear and to clear off the remaining algae and eliminate cloudiness. In severe cases of algal bloom, where algae has taken over the pool completely even after you have just cleaned and replaced the water, an acid wash solution can be the absolute fix to this problem. The process should be done by trained personnel since the procedure is fairly complex and has its own risks. Better contact your local pool store or service provider so that your summer fun won’t be ruined by contaminated water.
