The Modern Applications Of Hydroponics

February 21, 2012 – What is hydroponics? Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. It is a subcategory of hydroculture that is currently used to produce large numbers of crops in countries like the United States and Canada. In addition to its commercial use, hydroponics gardening also has several other applications including scientific studies, home gardening, and an alternative to traditional farming altogether.

Of course, the most common application of hydroponics gardening has got something to do with the farming industry. It takes large investment to establish a hydroponics farm but the return of profits is staggering – double, even triple the amount earned with traditional farming methods. This modern farming technique reduces production costs in a number of ways, that’s why it is highly profitable.

Because hydroponics gardening eliminates the need for soil, farmers no longer have to invest in fertilizers as well as labor and equipment that were originally used to plow land. The time it takes to plant and harvest crops is also reduced since tilling the soil itself takes long, allowing farmers to plant even more crops in the shortest time possible. Hydroponics also takes place in a controlled environment, extending the growths of plants beyond their season.

Hydroponics gardening is foreseen as the solution to famine in third world countries. It is an expensive investment in the first few years but once production catches up, the return of profit will not only solve famine but help third world countries recover financially too. By reducing production costs, profitability is maximized. Moreover, hydroponics is also a good way to maintain stable production of crops despite natural calamities and occurrences such as pests, hurricanes, and floods.

Another possible application of hydroponics gardening is the cultivation of plants in space stations. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is even looking forward to using it as a technique to grow produce for colonies which may be established in other planets in the distant future. Back here on earth, researches living in research stations based in the Antarctic Circle are studying whether or not it is possible to use it as a means to grow plants despite harsh living conditions.

Finally, hydroponics gardening may also be applied in home gardening. Urban dwellers can even use this technique to grow terrestrial plants in the absence of soil or a garden – two factors usually present in a typical, suburban backyard. Home gardening with hydroponics has a number of advantages as well that homeowners can benefit from.
