Shopping For A Mattress

February 5, 2012 – When you find an apartment one of the first things you do is take your old mattress with you or get a mattress for you new place. Where you get your mattress depends on what you want in a mattress, how much you know about getting one and what you can afford to spend.

When you go mattress shopping don’t be overly tempted to buy the cheapest mattress you find. Look for a mattress that will fit your room in your apartment. Sit on the mattress. Does the mattress sink in a lot, or just a little bit? If it has a lot of life in it, the mattress is not going to sink in a whole lot.

What size are you looking for? Mattresses come in different sizes and this may vary from area to area. The sizing usually starts at a single bed, twin, double, king, and queen. If you have a smaller apartment, the single or twin is your best bet since it is small but gives you a good place to sleep. Take your measuring tape with you if that makes you feel more secure about sizing.

Smell the mattress. If you are getting your mattress from a thrift store you don’t want to buy a mattress that has a smoke smell to it. Unless you have a steam cleaner that can really clean the smell out of the mattress, you probably don’t want to fuss with a smoke-smelling mattress. The same goes for any other odor. Don’t worry about looking or feeling weird. You’re going to be sleeping on the mattress, so make sure the mattress smells decently clean or like you could steam clean it reasonably enough.

Look over the mattress. Are there any stains or dirt marks, paint, pet hair or any other things on it? Again, this is where a steam cleaner comes in. If you do find some of those things on the mattress, unless it is just covered in it, a steam cleaner is your best friend. Now, paint is another story. You don’t want a mattress that has paint on it. You want something that is mostly if not completely free of stains.

This should give someone a few things to think about when shopping for a mattress. You may have to do a lot of mattress shopping before you find the right one for you.
