Make Your Computer Startup Faster At Reboot

February 20, 2012 – Understanding how to make your computer startup faster can make you more productive and improve your enjoyment of using the PC. This post shows how to improve the startup times from a full reboot.

The easiest way to startup faster is to reduce the number of software applications being initialized at boot time. Microsoft provide a couple of different ways to access this information but one of the best choices is to use the System Configuration tool located under start/run/msconfig as it contains a centralized list of all initialized programs. The startup tab allows you to disable applications from being initialized during startup via the check-boxes.

When using the application, just be careful to not delete any anti-virus update services or critical security system software. The program only displays executable filenames so you may have to research these online first before choosing to deselect an application.

For those programs left enabled in msconfig, you should also look at improving how they perform in order to make your computer startup faster. The main way of doing this is to get updates of the applications. Running the Windows update service will get many of the background services that are initialized at startup time. However, you have to manually check for updates to any non-operating system applications directly via their websites.

The last step to do is to improve overall PC performance which can help make a computer startup faster and operate more smoothly in general terms. Disk access times can be the major performance hit for applications and the OS so this can be improved by using a disk defragmenter to reorganize data fragments on the disk. You should also use the Disk Cleanup tool to free up extra space on the hard disk for virtual memory to expand. Lastly, the virtual memory itself can be increased in size by allocating a large maximum page file size in the performance options window.
